Mahón, or Maó, is the capital of Menorca. It’s known for its British-style Georgian houses and sheltered harbor which is the second deepest in the world after Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

 

Technically a city, but more like a large town, Ciutadella (once the island’s capital) is an ancient port and a fabulously picturesque place to visit. The old town is characterful and well preserved, with pretty and often colourful architecture reflecting the port’s rich history. Narrow streets and cobbled walkways, lined with traditional rustic houses, give way to plazas with dramatic churches,

The fishing village of Fornells is located on the more rugged northern coast of the island. Its long bay provides plenty of opportunities for watersports, as well as four tiny coves and a few small islets to explore. You can also find the Reserva La Concepció nature reserve, where you can visit the 19th-century saltworks where Flor de Fornells is still harvested. 

There are some 1.400 prehistoric sites on Menorca. One of the most visited is the emblematic Naveta des Tudons, the Necrópolis de Calescoves in a beautiful natural environment, the talayotic settlement of Torre d'en Galmés, one of the largest on the island, and also do not miss the settlements Talatí de Dalt, Binissafullet or Trepucó. The most spectacular necropolis is the one in Cala Morell.

The CAMI DE CAVALLS is an ancient path of 186 km (116 miles) that existed since 1330. The path encircles the island. This long-distance walking route is the GR 223of the Senderos de Gran Recorrido network in Spain and it is also used to reach some of the most inaccessible beaches of Menorca.

The guides and guardians of sailors, lighthouses are an icon of the Menorcan coast. From the oldest one in CAVALLERIA to the most recent one in FAVÀRITX, the seven Menorcan lighthouses continue to function today just as they were meant to: guiding and providing navigational landmarks. The space where the lighthouse keepers and their families lived is now as well used for tourism and cultural activities.

The Santa Maria Cathedral of Ciutadella is a gothic style building constructed between the XIII and XIV century. The cathedral is located in a very touristic and crowded zone, right next to the shopping street of Ses Voltes. You can visit the cathedral for free although you have to avoid the hours of mass.
